Knoxville, TN · Plumbing
If you own a plumbing business in Knoxville and you are not showing up in Google's top three results, you are handing 50 to 60 percent of your potential customers to your competitors. Not because they do better work — but because Google only displays three businesses in the local pack, and those three get the majority of all clicks. Friendly Neighborhood Plumber has built something real: a solid reputation, a professional website, and a review system most plumbers would envy. But when someone in Knoxville searches for a plumber right now, Friendly Neighborhood Plumber is not on the first page. That means every single day, people who need exactly what this business offers are calling Tennessee Standard, Hard Knox Plumbing, and Hillard Plumbing instead — simply because Google shows them first.
We audited Friendly Neighborhood Plumber, a plumbing business serving Knoxville, Tennessee and surrounding counties. At Tae Results, we help local businesses show up higher on Google so their phone rings more often. In this audit, we looked at how Friendly Neighborhood Plumber appears on Google Search and Maps, reviewed their Google Business Profile, checked their website, and assessed their citation presence.
Watch the full video audit above, then read the detailed breakdown below.
We started by Googling their business name to check for brand competition — whether another company has a similar name or if other pages are pushing them down. Friendly Neighborhood Plumber clears this test without any issues. Their brand name is unique enough that when you search it, they own the results. No confusion, no dilution.
The real test comes next. We searched "plumbing in Knoxville, Tennessee" the way an actual customer would. Friendly Neighborhood Plumber did not appear on the first page. The three businesses holding those top spots right now are Tennessee Standard, Hard Knox Plumbing, and Hillard Plumbing. That is the gap this audit is designed to close. The good news is there is nothing fundamentally broken — it is a matter of tightening up the details that Google weighs when deciding who to show first.
This is where Friendly Neighborhood Plumber really stands out. Their review count is strong, and more importantly, their review velocity is solid. They appear to have a system in place for consistently generating new reviews, which is exactly what Google wants to see. We always aim for at least two to three reviews per week for our clients. The more consistent and recent your reviews are, the more Google treats your profile as active, trustworthy, and relevant to your main keyword.
Photos are in good shape too. Having a steady flow of geotagged photos increases trustworthiness in Google's eyes and improves activity signals. It also increases engagement from real people browsing the profile — when a homeowner is comparing plumbers and they can see your work, your crew, and your trucks, they are far more likely to pick up the phone. Both reviews and photos are areas where Friendly Neighborhood Plumber is ahead of most local competition, similar to what we found in the Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Knoxville audit where review volume was also a clear strength.
When it comes to GBP categories, the general rule is no more than three, and ideally just one. For a plumbing business, "Plumber" is all you need as your primary category. Adding too many categories dilutes your signal. If you are wondering how to capture the full range of services — kitchen plumbing, water heater installation, drain cleaning — that is exactly what GBP services are for. Google gives you up to 99 service slots. We recommend filling in at least 30, with the top 20 including written descriptions. This gives Google more content to work with and helps you show up for more specific queries like "kitchen plumbing Knoxville" or "tankless water heater installation near me."
Beyond services, all of those tedious questions and attributes Google asks you to fill out — hours, accessibility options, service highlights, payment methods — you want every single one completed. Each answer gives Google more data and more confidence in your profile. With the rise of AI-generated summaries and answer boxes, Google is actively pulling from your GBP to answer customer questions before they even ask. The businesses that give Google the most to work with get the most visibility.
One thing Friendly Neighborhood Plumber does have in place is a working "Book Online" button. That is critical. You want to reduce friction between someone finding you and someone contacting you. Every extra click you add is a lost customer. This is set up correctly and working, which puts them ahead of many competitors. In our SMK Plumbing & Electric audit, the lack of a clear booking path was a significant missed opportunity — Friendly Neighborhood Plumber has that covered.
The website is one of the strongest parts of this entire audit. The title tag reads "Plumbing Service in Knoxville, Tennessee – Friendly Neighborhood Plumber." That is exactly what you want. The primary keyword and city are front-loaded, followed by the business name. We would not change a thing.
The H1 tag says "Plumbing Services in Knoxville, Tennessee" — again, perfect. This is the keyword-plus-city structure that tells Google exactly what this page is about. The call-to-action is visible and leads directly to a booking page. The website design overall is clean, professional, and well-organized with dedicated service pages and area pages. It is clear this was either built by someone who knows what they are doing or the business owner has serious web development skills.
The site has a solid number of indexed pages, which we expected based on the structure. They have built out individual service pages and area pages for the towns they cover — Farragut, Maryville, Oak Ridge, Powell, Seymour, Fountain City, and more. This is exactly the playbook we follow with our own clients. Every area page is a content opportunity. If someone in Fountain City searches for a plumber, Friendly Neighborhood Plumber can now compete for that query specifically because they have a dedicated page for it. We recommend having at least 30 combined service and area pages, and they are well on their way.
Despite how strong the website is overall, there are a few things that need attention. The first is embedding Google Maps. Adding an embedded Google Map for each service area helps Google link your website to those physical locations. It strengthens the proximity signal and makes it easier for Google to show you in results for those specific towns and cities. This is a simple addition that can have a real impact on rankings.
The second is NAP consistency. NAP stands for Name, Address, and Phone Number. Because Friendly Neighborhood Plumber operates as a service-area business, their physical address is hidden on Google — that is normal and fine. But whatever exact address they used to verify their Google Business Profile needs to appear identically everywhere: on their website, in their citations, on their social media. If Google sees "Road" in one place and "Rd" in another, that inconsistency creates doubt. It might seem like a small thing, but it directly impacts rankings. We found the exact same type of issue in our Scott's Plumbing Company audit where "#5" versus "STE 5" was undermining trust signals. Getting this right across every platform is one of the easiest wins in local SEO.
Page speed matters because it is one of the few ranking factors Google has explicitly confirmed. We always test on mobile first because the majority of local searches happen on phones. Friendly Neighborhood Plumber scored a 54 on mobile PageSpeed. That needs to come up to at least 70. A score of 54 means there are backend code issues — likely unoptimized images, render-blocking scripts, or unused CSS — that are slowing down the load time. The website looks great on the front end, but the underlying code has room for improvement. If we were working with them, we would dig into the backend and address each of those slowdowns individually.
On the positive side, the site is SSL certified (HTTPS), which is a baseline requirement. They also have schema markup implemented, which means their business information is formatted in the structured data format that Google prefers. Schema helps Google read and understand the critical details about a business — name, address, services, hours — and display them correctly in search results. Having this already in place is a significant advantage that most small businesses overlook entirely. Unlike SMK Plumbing & Electric which is missing schema altogether, Friendly Neighborhood Plumber has this technical foundation covered.
Citations are mentions of your business on high-authority directories and websites across the internet. The more reputable sites that list your business with consistent information, the more Google trusts you. It is like getting a vote of confidence from the internet. Friendly Neighborhood Plumber has the basics covered — Yelp, Facebook, Apple Maps, Google Maps, Nextdoor, BBB, and MapQuest are all in place.
But the basics are just the starting line. There are hundreds of additional directories, niche-specific platforms, and high-authority websites where a plumbing business can build citations. We use a dedicated tool to audit citation coverage and find gaps, and building those out is one of the simplest things Friendly Neighborhood Plumber can do to push their rankings higher. This is the same recommendation we made in the Scott's Plumbing Company audit and the Best Plumber audit — once your foundation is solid, citations are the next layer of authority that separates the top 3 from everyone else.
Friendly Neighborhood Plumber has several genuine strengths. Their review system is working and velocity is strong. Their website is well-built with proper title tags, H1s, and real service and area page content across Knoxville and surrounding cities. They have schema markup implemented. They have SSL. They have a working booking button that reduces friction. Their brand name is clean and uncontested on Google. Their basic citation profile is in place. The foundation here is legitimately strong — this is not a business that needs a complete overhaul.
1. Improve mobile page speed to 70 or above. A score of 54 is below the threshold. Dig into the backend — optimize images, defer render-blocking scripts, remove unused CSS — and bring mobile speed up to at least 70. This is a confirmed Google ranking factor.
2. Embed Google Maps on the website. Add an embedded Google Map for each service area. This is a simple addition that strengthens the proximity signal and helps Google link the website to the specific towns and cities they serve.
3. Lock down NAP consistency. Whatever exact address was used to verify the GBP — exact same spelling, abbreviations, formatting — needs to appear identically on the website, every citation, and every social media profile. No exceptions.
4. Fill out GBP services with descriptions. Load at least 30 services into the Google Business Profile. Write descriptions for the top 20. This is how you capture specific queries like "kitchen plumbing Knoxville" without adding extra categories.
5. Build citations beyond the basics. The foundational directories are covered. Now build out 50+ additional citations on niche-specific platforms, data aggregators, and high-authority local directories to strengthen trust signals.
Bonus: Streamline GBP categories to one primary ("Plumber"), complete all GBP attributes and Q&A fields, and continue the strong review velocity.
