Knoxville, TN · Plumbing
SMK Plumbing & Electric is ranked 12th on Google Maps for plumbing in Knoxville — close enough to the top 10 that a few targeted fixes could make a real difference. The top 3 get around 60% of all clicks. The gap between position 12 and position 3 is not about doing more work — it is about fixing the right things. Every position gained means more calls and more revenue.

We started by Googling "SMK Plumbing and Electric" to see what comes up. No other businesses are competing for their name, and their results are clean on the first page. That brand search is uncontested, which is a good starting position.
For the main keyword search — "plumber in Knoxville Tennessee" — SMK Plumbing & Electric ranks at approximately position 12. In a highly competitive market like plumbing in Knoxville, ranking 12th is actually not bad. It means they are already doing a lot of things right, and just a few targeted tweaks could push them through the top 10 barrier and into contention for the top 3. The top 3 businesses receive around 60% of all click-through traffic from people already searching for plumbing services in the area.
SMK Plumbing & Electric has 233 reviews with a perfect 5-star rating. The review velocity looks healthy — they have a steady flow of new reviews coming in, which is more important for rankings than the total count. Google weights recent, consistent reviews higher than a large batch from a year ago. SMK Plumbing & Electric appears to have a working review system and should keep doing what they are doing.
Their photos are diverse and show different types of projects and team members. None are stock images. Geotagging photos with GPS coordinates from specific target areas like Sequoyah Hills — the wealthier part of Knoxville — could help reinforce the business's relevance in those neighborhoods. The photo situation is solid overall.
One area for improvement is their GBP categories. SMK Plumbing & Electric has seven categories set. As a general rule, we recommend one primary category at most three. Too many categories can confuse Google's algorithm about what the business's core service actually is, diluting the ranking power of the primary keyword. We would recommend pruning down to Plumber as the primary category with one or two supporting categories, and moving everything else into the services section.
SMK Plumbing & Electric does have services listed, which puts them ahead of most competitors. The next step is adding descriptions to the top 20 services to capture broader search queries from people looking for specific types of plumbing work in Knoxville.
The booking link is set up but currently does not land on their actual contact form — it goes to a different page. A quick fix would be to update the booking URL to point directly to the contact page with the inquiry form, reducing friction for potential customers trying to reach them.
The Q&A / FAQ section should also be populated with 5–10 common customer questions. This gives Google more keyword-rich content directly on the profile and answers customer questions before they even have to ask.
The SMK Plumbing & Electric website title tag reads "Knoxville Plumbing and Electric SMK Plumbing and Electric." This includes the keyword, location, and business name, which is exactly what we want to see. No changes needed here.
The H1 tag contains the keyword and city, which is correct, though there appears to be a display or interface issue on the website that is affecting how it renders visually. If SMK Plumbing & Electric wants their website to look as professional as possible, that visual glitch should be fixed.
A significant finding is that SMK Plumbing & Electric does not have their address displayed anywhere on their website. On their GBP, the address is listed as 3300 Rifle Range Road, with Road abbreviated as "RD." Since the address does not appear on the website at all, Google is missing a key NAP signal from one of the most important platforms. We would recommend adding the full address to the website footer using the exact same formatting as the GBP — including "RD" not "Road" — and embedding a Google Map alongside it. The map sends Google another location confirmation signal and gives visitors an easy way to understand where the business operates.
NAP consistency matters because when Google sees mismatched or missing business information across platforms, it creates uncertainty about which version is correct. That uncertainty directly costs rankings. The fix is simple — put the address on the website — but it needs to match the GBP exactly.
SMK Plumbing & Electric has 27 indexed pages, which is close to our minimum target of 30. The content includes service-specific pages like "Knoxville septic services" that allow the business to compete for specific search queries. Adding a few more service or area pages would push them past the 30-page threshold and create more opportunities to capture search traffic.
Website speed has room for improvement. Google has confirmed that page speed directly influences rankings, and slow sites lose visitors. If a potential customer taps a link and stares at a loading screen for four seconds, they hit back and call a competitor. We would look at the backend code to identify what is causing the speed issues and fix them.
The site has a valid SSL certificate (HTTPS).
SMK Plumbing & Electric does not have LocalBusiness schema markup on their website. Schema is a structured data format that packages the business's name, address, phone number, hours, and services in a way Google can read instantly. Adding it takes 15–20 minutes and removes any ambiguity about who the business is and where they operate. This would be one of the first things we would fix.
SMK Plumbing & Electric has citations on Yelp, Facebook, Angie's List, MapQuest, and Yahoo. Those cover some of the high-authority basics. A more thorough citation audit would reveal specific gaps, but at a surface level, there is room to build out the profile further with Apple Business Connect, Bing Places, Nextdoor, BBB, and plumbing-specific directories.
SMK Plumbing & Electric is in a strong position. They rank 12th for their main keyword — close enough to the top 10 that targeted improvements can make a real difference. Their 233 reviews with 5-star rating and healthy velocity are competitive. Their photos are diverse and authentic. Their title tag is properly structured. They have services listed on their GBP. They have a booking link set up. And they have 27 indexed pages providing solid content coverage. The foundation is strong.
1. Add the business address to the website and embed a Google Map. The missing address is the biggest gap. We found a different version of this problem in our Mr. Rooter Plumbing of Knoxville audit where the address was present but formatted inconsistently — both issues hurt rankings for the same reason. Add it to the footer using the exact GBP formatting ("RD" not "Road") and embed a map. This sends Google a critical location signal that is currently absent.
2. Add LocalBusiness schema markup. This takes 15–20 minutes and immediately helps Google understand the business's key information in its preferred structured format. One of the fastest technical wins available.
3. Prune GBP categories from 7 down to 1–3. Keep Plumber as the primary category and remove the rest to stop diluting the ranking signal. Move those services into the GBP services section instead.
Bonus: Add descriptions to the top 20 GBP services, fix the booking link to point to the contact form, populate the Q&A section, build 3–5 more indexed pages to hit the 30-page target, geotag photos with coordinates from target neighborhoods, fix the H1 display glitch, and improve website speed through backend optimization.
